A guarded border two hours north, an island of tree avenues, five Joseon palaces inside the old walls, a market that feeds standing crowds, a fortress wall at the end of a metro line, and a pedal car on abandoned railway.

Five Joseon palaces stand inside the old city walls. Gyeongbokgung has the ceremony at the gate and the crowds that come for it, Changdeokgung keeps its secret garden behind a timed ticket, and the Bukchon lanes climb between them. Wear hanbok and all five let you in free.

The largest of the five and the one with the changing of the guard at Gwanghwamun. Tuesday closing catches out more visitors than anything else in the city, and the morning ceremony is the reason to be early rather than merely punctual.
Bukchon, walked before nine
Six hundred tiled roofs on a hill between two palaces, with residents behind every one of the gates. The signs asking for quiet are enforced by wardens, and the coach groups start arriving around ten.
Hanbok rental, and free admission
Shops line the streets opposite the palace gates and rent by the hour or the day, hairpiece and storage bag included. The waived admission is real money saved; the photographs in the courtyard are the actual reason anybody does it.
Seoul does not close. It changes shift.
The tower lights up on Namsan, the bridges throw water into the river, Gwangjang keeps frying until the last train and Hongdae carries on well past it. This city’s second half starts around the hour other capitals stack the chairs.

Hanbok at the palace gates
Wear hanbok and every one of the five palaces waives the entry fee, which is why the courtyards fill with silk on any decent afternoon. Rental shops sit directly opposite Gyeongbokgung, charge by the hour, and throw in the hairpiece and a bag for your own clothes. Book the two-hour slot; almost nobody lasts four.

The Gangchon rail bike
When the Gyeongchun line was rerouted the rails stayed where they were. Four-seat pedal cars now run the abandoned stretch through river cuttings and tunnels lit like a nightclub, with a tourist train to carry you back at the far end. The whole route is flat, which nobody mentions until the tickets are paid for.
